Cultures of Science and the Wellcome Global Monitor: a conceptual re-analysis

Martin BAUER, Psychology and Behavioural Science, LSE, United Kingdom

We will take variables of the WGM 2018 and re-interpret these in the light of the PREK model of science culture [promise, reserve, engage, and know]. This allows us to compare and characterise science cultures on 3D+ model of attitude (Bauer & Suerdem, 2016 and 2019). We will seek to demonstrate how this model characterises diversity of science cultures and shows how this science culture is related to ‘vaccination hesitancy’ in unexpected ways, thus validating the PREK model and its possibilities. These tests of the model will unfold mainly on European data, but as will become obvious it can easily be generalised to other world regions and while at the same time avoiding crass ethnocentrism of interpretation.
