NEWSERA is a project, funded by the European Commission, that aims to analyse and evaluate science communication strategies developed by citizen science projects, directed to various stakeholders, as a new paradigm for science communication. In this sense, citizen science can be seen as a tool that allows to: increase trust in science and in science communication; strengthen the link between science, innovation and society; and promote the dialogue between science and society.
Using a bottom-up approach to co-design communication strategies, NEWSERA connects citizen science projects with quadruple helix representatives: civil society, scientists, industry and small & medium-sized enterprises, policy makers and representatives of the public sector. This connection is attained through three sets of workshops. The first workshop round being the one in which the projects co-design, along with members of the quadruple helix, the communication strategies. The second and third rounds of workshops are meant to, respectively, follow-up the process and evaluate its impact. Knowing that the projects are in different stages of implementation and communication with the target audiences, the communication strategies are customized according to the needs of each project and stakeholder, trying to create a common understanding.
During the first round of workshops, projects from the consortium countries (Spain, Italy and Portugal) have worked along with the stakeholders, in order to develop innovative ways to reach the various audiences, being supported by experts in communication as well as practitioners.
In this presentation, we will give account of the co-created science communication actions arising from the NEWSERA workshops and discuss and reflect on their relevance in establishing citizen science as a tool to increase dialogue between science and society.
